a Drug-Free Future: The Impact of the Drug-Free Communities(DFC) Coalition

In communities across the country, prevention has become a proactive conversation rather than a crisis conversation, and a daily commitment to our youth's well-being. In Meridian and Lauderdale County, that commitment takes shape through the work of The Montgomery Institute/Community Health Improvement Network Drug-Free Communities’ (TMI/CHIN DFC) Coalition, a program dedicated to reducing youth substance use and strengthening the support systems that help young people thrive.

Funded through the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the DFC program empowers local coalitions to build formidable infrastructures connecting schools, families, and community partners in a shared mission: prevention through education, awareness, and engagement.

This year, that mission has come to life in meaningful ways across Meridian Public School District and Lauderdale County Schools, particularly within middle and high school settings where students navigate their critical developmental years.

From Initiative to Implementation

The introduction of this DFC program represents the beginning of a sustained, community-wide approach to prevention.

TMI/CHIN DFC Director Lacey Williams implemented the program in collaboration with school administrators, teachers, and community stakeholders. These partnerships ensured that prevention efforts are integrated experiences, not isolated events, meeting students where they are academically and socially.

Middle and high school students across these school districts participated in targeted prevention campaigns designed to increase awareness of substance use and its impact. These efforts focus on the dangers of drugs and alcohol and building the confidence and decision-making skills necessary to navigate peer pressure and real-world challenges.

Engaging Students Through Interactive Learning

At the heart of the DFC initiative is a commitment to active, student-centered learning. Rather than relying solely on traditional lecture-style approaches, the program incorporates engaging tools such as educational videos and hands-on worksheets that invite students to think critically and participate in meaningful discussions.

One of the central components of this year’s programming has been helping students explore a fundamental question: What is a drug and what is not? Through guided activities, students have examined common misconceptions, identified different types of substances, and gained a clearer understanding of how these substances affect the body and mind.

These interactive elements have been especially effective in encouraging student engagement. By allowing students to reflect, respond, and discuss, the program creates a learning environment where information is received, understood, and applied.

Building Awareness and Confidence

Knowledge alone is not enough. The DFC program places equal emphasis on building confidence, helping students develop the ability to make informed decisions and stand firm in those choices.

Through prevention campaigns and classroom discussions, students learn to recognize risk factors such as peer pressure, stress, and social influences. Just as importantly, the program equips them with strategies to respond, whether that means saying no, seeking support, or making choices to align with their goals and values.

This dual focus on awareness and empowerment is critical during the middle and high school years, when students are increasingly exposed to situations challenging their judgment. By addressing these realities head-on, the TMI/CHINDFC Coalition helps students prepare for school and life.

The Power of PartnershipS

The collaborative foundation, a defining strength of the DFC program in Meridian and Lauderdale County, is rooted in the partnerships between schools, community organizations, and local leaders sharing a commitment to youth well-being.

These partnerships allowed the program to expand its reach and deepen its impact, reinforcing prevention messaging across multiple environments. Consistent messages at school, at home, and within the community carry greater weight and meaning to the student. Also, integrating prevention into the school environment, teachers and counselors become key allies in reinforcing the DFC lessons the students are learning.

Early Success and Growing Momentum

While comprehensive data and long-term outcomes will be shared in a forthcoming program update, early indicators point to a highly successful first phase of implementation.

Students have actively engaged with the material, participating in discussions, and demonstrating a growing understanding of substance use and its consequences. Alos, schools embraced the program, and community partnerships continue to strengthen as the initiative grows.

More importantly, conversations about drugs and alcohol are becoming more normalized, informed, and constructive in classrooms and beyond. The program is fostering something less measurable but equally significant: a cultural shift toward openness, education, and prevention.

Looking Ahead

The work of The Montgomery Institute (TMI)/Community Health Improvement Network (CHIN) Drug-Free Communities Coalition (DFC) in Meridian and Lauderdale County is just beginning. As the program continues to expand, future efforts will build on this year’s success, introducing new strategies, deepening partnerships, and reaching even more students

.

We are working on a comprehensive update highlighting the full scope and impact of the program offering a closer look at outcomes, insights, and the path forward.

For now, one thing is clear: through collaboration, education, and a shared commitment to prevention, TMI/CHIN’s DFC Coalition is helping shape a future where young people are informed and enabled to lead healthy, drug-free lives.
